Brown (multilocular) adipose is found in newborns and is capable of fueling generation of a significant amount of heat. Brown adipose tissue stores lipid in multiple small vesicles, giving the cytoplasm a vacuolated appearance. They also have a large amount of cytoplasm which stains darkly due to the presence of many mitochondria. The tissue is also very vascular. At high magnification, the nuclei of brown adipocytes (arrow) are seen to be eccentrically located within the cell, and are surrounded by a significant quantity of eosinophilic cytoplasm. The stored lipid is contained within multiple droplets, which have been dissolved away during fixation.
