This micrograph demonstrates the characteristic histological features of
skeletal muscle fibers in longitudinal section. Skeletal muscle fibers are
extremely elongated, unbranched cylindrical cells with numerous flattened
nuclei located at fairly regular intervals just beneath the sarcolemma (a).
Regular cross striations are the characteristic feature of skeletal muscle
fibers and can be seen in longitudinal sections such as this (arrows). The
cross-striations result from the arrangement of the contractile proteins
contained within the muscle cell itself. |
