The Pars distalis, or adenohypophysis, is a strictly endocrine organ under control of the hypothalamus' releasing factors by way of the hypophysial portal system. The three objective cell types are named after their staining characteristics: the acidophils (mammotrophs and somatotrophs), the basophils (corticotrophs, thyrotrophs, and gonadotrophs), and chromophobes (uncertain function). |
