In this photomicrograph, the larynx is seen in coronal section. The respiratory epithelium is the darkly stained layer at the top of the section, while numerous glands are seen throughout the connective tissue stroma. The lighter density areas at the left of the field are collections of adipocytes, while the continuous mass of tissue traversing the field is the hyaline cartilage of the laryngeal skeleton. The contours of the top surface represent the vocal folds; presumably, the central contour is the false vocal fold, while the true fold extends beyond the right boundary of the field.
