A Physicians Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

A course of study developed by Terry A. Hagan, Ed.D. with the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University

Purpose

This course is designed to enable physicians to base their clinical advice relative to their patient's use and/or abuse of mood altering substances on adequate scientific knowledge and to develop attitudes and skills that will facilitate effective interventions for patients with current or potential substance use disorders.

Design

This course is designed to achieve the following set of objectives. Each objective is linked to material that will help you achieve the objective. At the end of each Objective Page you will find study questions that will allow you to assess your progress and confidence in your understanding of the concepts and facts presented. You are invited to pursue each topic area as far as you like. Your minimum objective, however, is to be able to answer the study questions at the end of each section. This effort will give you a guided tour through the materials that should prove helpful if you are ever in need of information to support your efforts to treat substance use disorders.
