Objective One

To describe a method of searching for substance abuse related information on the WEB.

If you are already know how to use search engines on the internet just skip this Objective and move on to Objective Two!

If using the Internet and WEB is new stuff for you than try a few of the following tips to get you going.

Learn what a URL is by reading a guide on the WEB. Please be aware that there is much more than you really need to know here but the first several paragraphs are very helpful. To come back here after you have read a little on URL's just click on the "BACK" button at the top of your screen. Click here when you are ready to go!

Perhaps the next most important thing to learn is how to use a search engine to help you with your search. "Search engines" are programs that are designed to go look for words you tell them you are interested in. There are many search engines out there and most are free for you to use. All you really need to know is their address or URL. Two of my favorites are:

LYCOS and YAHOO

If you want to explore these sites just click on their names or their URL's and then when you are ready to come back here just click on the back button at the top of your screen. You may have to click it several times because it will move you backward through all of the different pages you may have explored while using the search engine.

Another tip that can really pay enormous dividends is the use of a little item called "bookmark." In most browsers (such as NETSCAPE) whenever you land on a site that really interests you, you can just click on BOOKMARK (a button usually found at the top of your screen) and the computer will record the URL for that site. When you want to return to that site later you just click on bookmark and ZAP it takes you right there. Give it a try.

When you see something that you may want a hard copy of just hit the button for printing. This usually is found at the top of your screen and it either says "PRINT" or shows the icon of a little printer. Not all sites will allow you to print out the material, but most will.

CAUTION: the initial temptation is to print out everything. This is not necessary! The whole notion of always having it available on the World Wide Web is that you don't need to carry all that paper around with you. Ask yourself if you are really going to be able to find what you printed out when you need it or will you most likely go back to the computer to find it. Learn to read things on the computer. It will save you time and simplify your life!

Finally, to learn more about the WEB and the INTERNET take a look at PC WEBOPAEDIA.

This should answer all your questions regarding the WEB, etc.

Finally, the very best way to learn to use the INTERNET and the WEB is to spend a little time with a friend or a tutor who can show you around. It is not very difficult. A lot of very young kids have taught themselves how to do it. But a little help from a friend can go a long way in this effort.
